NFC doesn't work when making payments

NFC doesn't work when making payments

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-distance wireless communications technology that allows mobile and other electronic devices to connect contactlessly. The NFC feature allows for mobile payments, identity authentication, transport card top-ups, balance queries for transport cards, data transmissions, and app sharing.

1.Prerequisites for using NFC functions

  • The device that your phone communicates with supports NFC (you can consult the device provider for this information).

  • Your phone supports NFC and it is enabled. To enable NFC on your phone, swipe down from the status bar to show the shortcuts panel, and enable NFC. (Your phone does not support NFC if there is no NFC shortcut icon.)

  • To use this function, make sure that theNFCarea is placed flat and above the tap-to-pay point.

2. Check the default payment app of NFC

Default payment apps of NFC are classified into three types: Wallet,SIMcard, and third-party apps. Different default payment apps entail different app services.

3. Check NFC settings

NFC settings are classified into two types: Always use default app,and Prioritize currently running app. Some apps may not support background payments and you need to open the app to pay.

4. Examples

  • A card issued by Google Wallet

Ensure that your phone is connected to the Internet and the screen is on.

  • If the balance of your default bank card is insufficient, the NFC payment will fail. Change the default payment card and try again.

  • It requires the POS to support NFC function.
  • AnNFC SIMcard

Insert theNFC SIM cardinto card tray1.(Only this tray supportssuchacard.)Set the default payment app to theSIMcard.

    • A SIM card that supports NFC is required, instead of a regular SIM card. You can contact your SIM card carrier for more details.
    • Contact your SIM card carrier to know whether its NFC SIM card service supports functions of payment via a bank card, health care account, and transport card, as well as access control.
    • If such a function is supported, make sure that your NFC SIM card has been enabled with the card-related function in the carrier's app.
    • If the balance of your SIM card is insufficient, the NFC payment will fail. Top up your SIM card and try again.

5. Reminders for NFC-based payment

  • If you are using a metal protective case, it will block NFC communication. It is recommended that you remove the case and try again.
  • To use a new card for payment, move your phone away from the tap-to-pay point and then place it back so that the new card can be identified.
  • Devices like POS terminalsthat supportNFCand subway turnstiles may have the compatibility issue. If an NFC-based payment fails, you can try this function on another device.
  • Use the NFC-based payment function when it has been enabled for 3 seconds. An NFC restart requires initialization that requires 2 to 3 seconds to complete. If you try to use the NFC-based payment function in this period, there is a possibility that the payment fails.
