What is Android Oreo?

Android is a mobile open-source operating system developed by Google and designed primarily for smartphones, tablets and other mobile touchscreen devices. It has been hugely successful and is now the most popular operating system in the world.

Android Oreo specifically is the 15^th version of the Android OS (the 13 most recent versions have all, rather delightfully, been named after sugary treats) and the 8th major revision, following on from its direct predecessor, Android Nougat.

What are its major features?

The Android Oreo Mascot is a “flying” superhero decked out in a cape and, true to this image, the Android Oreo OS offers a number of impressive new features that improve on what was offered by Android Nougat. While some of these improvements are aimed at developers, a brief summary of some of those aimed at improving the user experience is provided below:

• Faster Boot Speed - now twice as fast when powering up (may vary by device)
• Background Limits - to minimise background activity
• New Autofill feature - remembers your various logins so you don’t have to (if you want it to)
• Smart Text Selection – means text is recognised when tapped or selected and logical next steps are suggested
• Picture-in-Picture – lets you look at two apps at once
• Notification dots – tell you what’s new quickly and easily and can be cleared by swiping
• Android Instant Apps – let you enter new apps direct from your browser, with no installation required
• New Emojis – 60 new creations to choose from
• Project Treble – a massive change to Android’s foundational architecture allowing HONOR to deliver Android updates more quickly and easily
• Find My Device – a reworking of Nougat’s Android Device Manager with improved user-friendliness, making it easier to track, lock or remotely wipe a missing device
• Google Play Protect – new and improved version to the version available on Nougat and incorporating a real-time security scanner, working as a whole to offer enhanced protection against data theft and malware
• Wi-Fi Assistant - providing auto-connection to high-performing Wi-Fi teamed with security provided by VPNs back to google
