HONOR Emphasizes Sustainability Strategy at UNGC 2023 Sustainable Development Conference

[Mexico City, Aug 30-31, 2023] The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) held the largest business and sustainable development conference in 2023, with more than 500 enterprises leading the discussion on the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Among them, Peter Grohmann, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Mexico, Barreto Canales, Executive Secretary of the National Council of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Mexico, and other UN officials delivered speeches.

Julio Meneses, HONOR Mexico Chief Marketing Officer, gave a speech at the workshop on “Impact Alliances for the SDGs: The relevance of Business sustainability towards the future”. He elaborated on HONOR’s practices in environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects in the past three years, as well as HONOR’s goal of achieving carbon neutral operations by 2045. In addition, during the conference, HONOR displayed its 2021-2022 ESG report and its achievements in empowering young people, attracting the attention of the participants.

HONOR’s Practices in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)

Julio mentioned at the workshop that HONOR has a global environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, with seven core pillars: Environmental Protection, Technology for Good, Youth Empowerment, Privacy Protection, Employee Development, Supplier CSR and Responsible Governance, to support the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

“In April this year, HONOR released its first ESG report, in which we introduced the milestones we have achieved so far, ” Julio said, “We always adhere to the spirit of Technology for Good, continuously promote sustainable development, and build a more responsible, inclusive and sustainable world.” Julio reaffirmed HONOR’s carbon neutral operations goal by 2045, which was also the first time that HONOR presented this goal at an international exhibition after its ESG report release in April 2023.

As its proactive measure to address the challenge of climate change, HONOR is committed to integrating a greener and more environmentally friendly operational philosophy into product research and design, and manufacturing, and to achieving a low-carbon future together with the partners. In addition, HONOR has incorporated the concept of circular economy into our product development life cycle. Through practice, HONOR has reduced the use of hazardous substances and materials by 3,861 tons and recycled more than 1,785 tons of e-waste. 98% of the materials used in the packaging of HONOR Magic Vs are also non-plastic. As of Q2 2023, HONOR has also employed intelligent technology to automate 80% of its production line, further bringing down the use of energy and resources in its production facilities. 

Currently, HONOR is on track to reduce its carbon emissions by 88%, achieve 100% use of renewable energy and reach carbon neutral operations by 2045. In addition, HONOR plans to promote its TOP100 suppliers to set carbon reduction targets and actively carry out emission reduction actions by 2030, contributing to the emission reduction of the industrial chain.

Youth Empowerment in Progress

In addition to its continuous efforts in sustainable development and technology for good, HONOR is committed to empowering young people.

In Mexico, HONOR and Universidad del Valle de México (UVM) jointly launched an entrepreneurship scholarship to help students incubate their business ideas. UVM is one of the top universities in Mexico and one of the most important universities in the entire Latin American region. HONOR and UVM jointly organized a series of lectures, master classes and workshops. The projects proposed by young students will also be incubated in UVM’s national incubator network.

By the end of 2022, HONOR and UVM had awarded scholarships to 75 student entrepreneurship teams. In the near future, these enterprises may become an important source of local employment opportunities and bring greater financial stability to society. In 2023, HONOR will also continue to cooperate with UVM, providing more support for young students with great creative vitality.
